Let’s be honest, snooping through someone’s phone is not a new concept. Since technology has been a part of our lives, there have been those who have found themselves reading through text messages, checking call logs, and more. In 2023, the Secure Data Recovery U.S. team surveyed Americans to learn about their digital snooping habits. So this year, the Secure Data Recovery UK team decided to learn more about those habits across the pond.

We surveyed UK residents in every country to uncover where residents are most guilty of going through someone’s device, who they have most commonly snooped on, what they discovered while snooping, and more. Read on to find out where Brits are most guilty of digital snooping.

Key Takeaways

  • Three in five Brits admit to digital snooping.
  • Northern Ireland residents are most likely in the UK to digitally snoop.
  • Two in five snoopers found something significant at least once.
  • One in five Brits who have snooped say they regret it.
  • One in eight Brits say snooping is only an invasion of privacy if nothing is found while looking.
  • One in three Brits say they have caught someone snooping on them.

It seems like curiosity is a universal trait. Nearly 3 in 5 Brits have admitted to snooping through someone's digital life, including text messages, social media messages, and emails, with Northern Ireland leading the pack. Women are also more likely to snoop than men — so if you’re seeing a Northern Irish girl, keep your devices on lockdown!

So, who are these digital detectives targeting? Unsurprisingly, partners, both current and former, are the most frequent victims. Almost half (48%) of digital nosy Nellies have admitted to invading the privacy of their current partner, while 45% confessed to snooping on an ex.

Romantic relationships aren’t the only ones under the magnifying glass, though. Parents aren't immune to the prying eyes of their children, with nearly 1 in 5 people admitting to snooping on their parents' devices. And it seems the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as a similar number have snooped on their own kids.

What exactly are people looking for when they decide to dive into someone else's digital world? The most common targets are text messages, social media, and call logs. Nearly a quarter of snoopers have admitted to checking someone’s browser history, while 1 in 5 have delved into saved files and images. It seems we're all a bit too interested in our loved ones' social media activity, with 1 in 6 confessing to checking followers and following lists and 1 in 8 checking likes.

While some might justify their snooping as well-intentioned — 1 in 2 say they did it because of suspected wrongdoing, and 1 in 6 claim it was for the safety of others. A fair number (65%) admit it's driven by plain old curiosity. It's a risky game though, as we'll soon see.

The thrill of the digital hunt often comes with a price. About 1 in 5 snoopers admitted to regretting their actions, suggesting that the discoveries weren't always pleasant. While half of those who snooped found nothing particularly alarming, a significant number uncovered evidence of infidelity, either digital (34%) or in person (20%).

Though about 1 in 8 think the ends justify the means and snooping is only an invasion of privacy if nothing incriminating is found, the overwhelming majority (83%) see it as a clear breach of trust. It’s also worth noting that 1 in 2 snoopers say they’ve never discovered anything bad while snooping — so, more often than not, the outcome is regret, especially for younger generations, and if the snooper gets caught in the act (10%).

If you think you’re safe from prying eyes, think again: 1 in 3 people have caught someone snooping on them, with ex-partners (25%) being the worst culprits. Current partners (20%) and parents (10%) also make the list, suggesting that no one is truly immune from digital invasion — and at the hands of people closest to them, to boot.

Younger generations seem to be more likely to both engage in and experience snooping. This might be because of their heavier reliance on technology, or simply a more open attitude toward sharing personal information.

Methodology

In this study, we survey more than 1,500 residents all across the UK to determine where people are the most guilty of digital snooping and where people are snooped on most often. We asked a variety of questions from who respondents have snooped on, what they found while snooping, what information they went through, who has snooped on them, and more.
